Overview
What you provide
- Provide application messages, a selected model adapter and explicitly defined tools or output schemas.
What you get
- The toolkit returns generated text, structured results, media or streams that the application renders to users.
Choosing this tool
AI SDK is a practical fit for TypeScript teams building streaming text, structured outputs, tool calls and chat interfaces across providers. Its Core and UI layers address different parts of that application. Pydantic AI is a better language match for a Python backend; LangChain is worth comparing for integration-heavy orchestration. Provider switching reduces adapter work but does not make model capabilities, output formats or prices identical.
A decision worked through
Two hundred UI messages do not necessarily equal two hundred billable model calls: a tool loop or retry may invoke the provider again. Measure tokens and tool rounds in the intended workflow before adding a fixed per-user subscription to your own app.

Setup & workflow
- Install ai and build one server-side text-generation route.
- Connect the stream to a small UI and test errors and cancellation.
- Add scoped tools and evaluate their server-side permission checks.
Requirements & installation
- Set up a TypeScript project with a supported runtime and keep provider credentials on the server.
Limits & review
- Streaming UI is not durable execution or automatic authorisation. Provider-specific features and external services retain their own limits, and SDK installation alone does not deploy the application.
Your part
- Validate tool arguments and final outputs on the server before persisting data or exposing actions.
