Overview

What you provide

  • A research question, selected sources and model configuration; file uploads are optional.

What you get

  • A cited answer, search results and locally retained query history.

Choosing this tool

Choose Vane when you want control of the answer interface and search stack and can maintain a container. It suits interactive cited web questions. GPT Researcher is closer to producing a research report; Khoj combines personal knowledge with assistant workflows. Cloud models still receive data sent to them even when the interface is self-hosted.

A decision worked through

For a technical question restricted to a vendor domain, set the domain scope and inspect the answer citations. Compare a fast search with a deeper mode on the same question. If the underlying search engine cannot retrieve the relevant page, changing the language model alone does not establish the missing evidence.

Setup & workflow

  1. Run the documented Docker image with a persistent data volume.
  2. Open the local setup screen and select the search and model settings.
  3. Ask a bounded question and validate its citations before relying on it.
Requirements & installation
  • Docker is recommended; configure a reachable local model or an authorized cloud API in the setup screen.

Limits & review

  • Self-hosting does not make external searches or cloud inference offline. The README lists authentication as upcoming, so protect any network exposure separately.

Your part

  • Open the cited pages and verify that they support the answer.
