Overview

What you provide

  • Select the screen rectangle containing text that cannot be copied directly.

What you get

  • NormCap recognizes the captured text for reuse rather than returning only a screenshot image.

Choosing this tool

NormCap is useful for a few unselectable lines in an application, not a document-ingestion project. Umi-OCR adds a richer screenshot and batch interface; NAPS2 can OCR imported images but is oriented toward page capture. Prefer the smallest workflow that preserves the text you need.

A decision worked through

Copying a short error message from a remote application requires one screen capture, not uploading the entire desktop recording. Select only the needed region, then verify punctuation and digits before pasting it into a bug report. There is no per-capture subscription meter.

NormCap alternatives for extracting text from an image

NormCap and Umi-OCR can capture a screen region directly. NAPS2 can recognize a saved screenshot after import, which adds a capture-and-import step. These options replace text extraction, not the whole desktop workflow.

  3. Proofread recognized text before inserting it elsewhere.
Requirements & installation
  • Use a prebuilt platform package or configure Tesseract and language data for a Python installation.

Limits & review

  • Screen-capture permissions and desktop protocols affect operation. The tool does not promise handwriting recognition, structured-table recovery or unlimited language coverage.

Your part

  • Check visually similar characters and line breaks before pasting into another application.
