Overview
What you provide
- Capture pages from a scanner or import supported images and documents for arrangement.
What you get
- NAPS2 saves assembled pages as PDF or image files and can add recognized text to PDFs.
Choosing this tool
NAPS2 fits paper intake where scanner drivers, duplex handling and page cleanup matter as much as OCR. OCRmyPDF is better aligned with an existing PDF archive and scripted processing; Umi-OCR is convenient for batches of existing images. Choose around the entry point rather than treating all OCR interfaces as equivalent.
A decision worked through
For forty double-sided sheets, verify duplex order on two sheets before scanning the entire stack. The free software does not correct an incorrectly configured feeder. Turn on the proper OCR language and confirm that a saved PDF can be searched outside the scanning application.
NAPS2 alternatives for scanned-document OCR
Compare the OCR stage after paper capture: NAPS2 also operates the scanner, while OCRmyPDF and Umi-OCR work with files that have already been captured. Match the searchable-PDF or text deliverable before choosing.

Setup & workflow
- Create a scan profile with the correct driver and page size.
- Scan a small duplex sample and inspect page order.
- Enable OCR and test search in the saved PDF.
Requirements & installation
- Install the supported scanner driver and download the needed OCR languages in NAPS2.
Limits & review
- Device support depends on operating-system drivers. OCR language files and scan quality affect recognition; a successful scan is not proof that every field was read correctly.
Your part
- Check page orientation, missing sheets and copied text before filing the document.
