Overview
What you provide
- You provide chat prompts, files, provider keys and agent/tool settings.
What you get
- You receive model responses, file-grounded answers and configured tool results.
Choosing this tool
Choose LibreChat when provider switching, chat history and reusable agents are the main job. It is an application you operate, not a free bundle of all the models it lists. Choose AnythingLLM for document workspaces or Khoj for personal knowledge and recurring research.
A decision worked through
For a shared assistant, first test a normal user against a restricted file and a tool requiring approval. A working administrator demo does not show that ordinary users have the intended permissions.
LibreChat alternatives: choose an implementation route
For LibreChat, compare a hosted multi-provider conversation interface with a document workspace and a desktop app exposing a local API.
| Product | Deployment requirements | Free allowance | Input → output | Key limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LibreChatRead profileOfficial source ↗ | Deploy a web chat server and configure provider credentials, storage and access controls. Cloud inference moves model compute off the host; experimental workspaces need extra isolation. | Self-managed edition | Chat prompts, files, provider keys and agent/tool settings → Model responses, file-grounded answers and configured tool results | See the product-specific review limits below. |
| AnythingLLMRead profileOfficial source ↗ | Desktop installer for one user; Docker for shared workspaces and the website widget. RAM and GPU needs depend on the chosen model and embeddings. | Self-managed edition | Documents, workspace rules and model/embedding connections → Document-grounded answers and optional agent actions | LLM, embedding and vector-store choices determine where data goes and what costs accrue. Retrieved citations still need checking; multi-user capabilities differ by edition. |
| JanRead profileOfficial source ↗ | Windows/macOS/Linux desktop app with a localhost:1337 API. Download a model that fits device memory; cloud-provider mode is a separate route. | Self-managed edition | Prompts, a downloaded model or provider connection → Chat responses and local API responses | Model size must fit RAM and acceleration support. MCP tools can introduce external connections or actions; local inference alone does not make every tool offline. |
